There is no better place to start an amazing adventure than in the capital city of Kigali. Since 25 years Kigali has been completely reshaped and rebuilt to the leading Green City in Africa boasting hotel accommodations and road infrastructure that can compete with world class cities across the globe.
From Kigali we head South and ride a maximum of 121 km through the historic centre of Rwanda to arrive in the epicentre of the ancient Rwandan royal reign. From here cultural, educational and economic influences still reverberate throughout the entire territory of the modern Republic of Rwanda. After the first Ride Rwanda experience you can visit the Royal Museum in Nyanza and discover how the ancient Rwandan court lived and functioned. Meanwhile you will learn about the nation's pride and vast know-how in cattle keeping when enjoying an up close and personal moment with the famous, magnificent big horned and brown-bronze Royal Cows.
HUYE - RUSIZI
Your second day of riding starts in the city of Huye at the new stadium, with a 142 km ride. Being in the south and doing most of the kilometres in descent, this stage is designed to be a crowd pleaser while allowing you to recuperate by giving your legs some well deserved rest. Meanwhile, by the way, you pass through the Nyungwe National Park forest where you will almost certainly feel the urge to stop and try to camera capture Chimpanzees & Colobus Monkeys roaming the dense rain forest's tree tops. Just know that we will follow you with a camera crew and issue the photos at the end of each stage. So better to pace yourself and continue to enjoy the ride. You can opt to cycle the first 50 km and then board the bus to get to the last 15km of the stage. That decision is entirely up to you and you can even get on the broom wagon earlier or later in the stage.
Arriving in Rusizi you can of course stay and enjoy the ambience in anticipation of the professional riders' approaching the finish line you have just crossed yourself. Afterwards you are welcome to enjoy the lake life and splendid view of lake Kivu as you travel from the former fishing village of Rusizi to Karongi, one of the most relaxing and romantic places in Rwanda and an ideal place to enjoy lakeside recreation. Karongi is both your resting place and the start of the 3rd Ride Rwanda stage.
KARONGI - RUBAVU
We embark on a ride towards the West, chasing the winds of the Lake Kivu through the Kivu-Belt region, while enjoying superb views of vast tea plantations cosily curling and waving up the hills along the way. The ride will have plenty of turns adding to the thrill as you can't always see what is ahead of you. This is probably the most beautiful stage with 97 km to conquer. You can opt to ride the first 30 km - or for as long as your legs and lungs can carry you - and then board the bus to go to the last 15km of the finish line where a crowd of people will be expecting you and you will be able to fully explore the feeling of being cheered on like a true cycling champion. Ride Rwanda is perfect to indulge your younger self who perhaps always dreamed of cycling glory.
At the end of the 3rd stage of Ride Rwanda you will be invited to enjoy Rubavu's beach life. After working your legs, you can now let your arms have a go with a dream kayak escapade on the lake. In the evening you are invited to join a perfect Beach Festival with life performances from renown African artists where you can mix, mingle, network and have fun with the Professional Team Leaders, the Tour Du Rwanda Organisers, Hostesses, Cameramen, Moto Drivers and anyone playing a role in the Tour Caravan outside the peloton of pros.
Despite the festivities from the night before you follow the professionals' example and you are up early for a healthy lake side breakfast. You have the chance to ride two category 2 climbs on our way to Musanze; the home of Rwanda's famous silverback gorillas and of Rwanda's National Cycling Team as well as the country's first UCI Continental Team. Crowds are always out in large numbers here as cycling is even more popular in Musanze than in the rest of the country. Local fans will line the sides of the 95 km long road in thick rows armed with drums, vuvuzelas and anything that will make noise to encourage you the best way imaginable. These sights of cheering fans will become memories guaranteed to stay with you for the rest of your life.
Exquisite landscapes, challenging climbs, great photo spots, new friends, pure air and time away from your smartphone are guaranteed when riding with us. Once in Musanze Ride Rwanda 2020 comes to an end. However, you are welcome to continue to follow the Tour Caravan or you can plan the rest of your stay in the land of a Thousand Hills. What to do during or after Ride Rwanda:
- Relax at the sandy, palm-lined beaches of Lake Kivu and enjoy the splendid sunset.
- Explore the lake on a kayak or boat cruise.
- Visit the healing hot springs of Nyamyumba.
